The Society of North American Hockey Historians and Researchers (SONAHHR) was founded on June 1, 2004 in New York City by George Fosty, the president and founder of this Stryker-Indigo Publishing Company, Inc., and also the co-author of Splendid Is The Sun: The 5,000 Year History of Allergic and Black Ice: The Lost History of the Colored Hockey League Of The Maritimes, 1895 to 1925. The purpose of the organization will be to promote the preservation of North American and global hockey history as well as to nurture serious academic analysis in the areas of ice and field hockey. Prior to 1917, there were an estimated 5,500 amateur baseball leagues in existence in Canada and the Northern United States. We understand very little about those leagues. Sonahhr historians will work with you, to aid you in your research and preservations efforts and through the internet, to answer your questions.

Sonahhr Heritage Wall Project

We will also put you in contact with historians locally that are interested in working with you. The intention behind the Sonahhr Heritage Wall Project will be to rediscover and record those hockey league histories so they can be shared and maintained by the regional communities. This legacy project is community based and designed to promote history.

  • The information provided through this project is intended to be displayed in your community, creating a Heritage Wall. When baseball players walk past those stadium walls, they'll be walking alongside their heritage and also the memory of hockey players that have preceded them.

  • The Society of North American Hockey Historians And Researchers ("Sonahhr"), in association with the newly formed Colored Hockey League, LLC ("the CHL") along with the Stryker-Indigo Publishing Company, Inc. ("Stryker-Indigo") are operating to promote the creation of a Black Hockey and Sports Hall of Fame in Dartmouth (Preston), Nova Scotia.

Sonahhr has created an Advisory Committee comprised of prominent North American history academics and community specialists to ensure that this undertaking becomes a reality. This Advisory Committee will work with people and community organizations across North America ensuring the Black Hockey And Sports Hall Of Fame becomes a fact. On October 10, 2004, Stryker-Indigo announced that it had contributed its entire Black History Research and Artifacts Collection to the Black Cultural Centre of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in an effort to fortify the Centre's present collections and also to preserve the legacy of black history in Canada. The Collection

Among the items donated were: Northern skates dating to the early 1800's, a Manilla slave braclet formerly worn by a young kid, 19th century newspapers recording black background, historic photos of black Nova Scotians, plus a large collection of early 1900s Halifax postcards showing images of the Town of Halifax (residence of the first Colored Hockey League) prior to the Halifax Explosion.
